At Longvernal, we follow the White Rose and NCETM schemes for Maths, teaching to mastery. These schemes cover the full curriculum while enabling children to develop a deeper understanding of key concepts. Each lesson is taught both as concrete and abstract. This is started in year 1 and is fully embedded throughout the school.
To consolidate learning, we use DoodleMaths and DoodleTables. These personalised programmes are tailored to each child’s needs, helping them revise and expand on specific areas. DoodleTables is introduced from Year 2 onwards to ensure all children are fluent in their times tables by the end of Key Stage 2.
We identify pupils in each class who require timely intervention to secure their progression. First and foremost, the Maths Lead monitors Mathematics lessons to ensure all are of the highest standard, thereby reducing the number of pupils needing extra support. In addition, daily short, one-to-one and group interventions are in place for pupils who are falling behind.
Oracy plays a significant role in how we teach Maths at Longvernal. In every lesson, children are encouraged to use their oracy skills to discuss key concepts and unpick common misconceptions through collaborative talk.
We believe it is vital to connect Maths to the real world. How are the concepts we learn relevant to careers and everyday life? For instance:
How do engineers use geometry?
Why is it essential for those in finance and retail to understand percentages?
How do computer programmers use algebra?
When are statistics applied in meaningful ways?
At Longvernal, we aim to broaden children’s horizons, helping them see the diverse opportunities their future holds. This vision is celebrated during our annual STEM Week, where professionals from STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) visit our school to talk about their careers and inspire the next generation.
