Welcome to Oak Class

Hello and welcome to Oak Class. We have had a wonderful start to the year and are settling well. We are enjoying a new structure to the day and exploring new learning.

In our English work we have created great story maps based on ‘Class Two at the Zoo’, in Maths we have been learning about place value and in Topic we have been discussing families and how we are all different.

We had our first Forest School session this week and really loved sharing special things we found in the Forest Area . We also had great fun building and creating new things.

What a great start to the year! We are really excited to continue our learning journeys over the rest of the year.

Oak Class have had some really enjoyable learning experiences this term. Our focus has been history, where we have been learning about knights and castles. We have learnt about the different types of castles and the people who worked in the castles. Oak Class have also enjoyed learning about the Legend of King Arthur. As part of our history learning we had a trip to Farleigh Castle, we had a tour of the castle, got to dress up in medieval costumes and even try on Chain Mail like a knight, it was extremely heavy!

In English we have been learning about Traditional Tales, we learnt many different versions of various stories and even wrote our own version of ‘The Three Little Pigs’. We have been learning how to multiply and divide in maths lessons, which has been really good fun. In science, we have learnt all about plants and have planted beans to monitor their growth. Forest School this term has been really good fun, we have began to learn how to whittle safely with carrots and peelers ready to begin whittling sticks next term.

We have had such fun with our learning this term in Oak Class. To start the term off, we had Book Week, which was really exciting. We learnt and performed our poems by A. A. Milne in front of the school and grown-ups and we dressed up as our favourite book characters. It was great fun guess which characters we all were. The day after World Book Day we had our trip to Bristol Aquarium, we really enjoyed looking at all of the different creatures and learning lots of new things about our seas. In lesson time for English we have written book reviews about ‘The Way Back Home’ by Oliver Jeffers, a brilliant recount of our trip to the aquarium and we have written an alternative version of ‘The Snail and the Whale’ by Julian Donaldson. In Maths, we have begun to learn to tell the time, about fractions (including cutting up yummy cakes!) and about position and direction. For our learning journeys this term, we have learnt about the oceans of the world, about different creatures under the sea and we have learnt about the impact of pollution on our oceans. We have even written letters to our local MP discussing the matter. In science, we have investigated the best material for a scuba suit and we had a visit from the Science Storyteller, Cassandra Wye. We have also made bird feeders and taken tree rubbings in Forest School. What a busy but fun term!

Bristol Aquarium Trip

On Friday 8th of March, Oak Class visited Bristol Aquarium as part of their ‘Under the sea’ topic. We were very excited to go, and spent time on the coach over to Bristol discussing the different creatures we may see. When we got outside of the aquarium we were greeted by a large statue of a beetle that we had our picture taken with. Then we went inside, it was so fascinating! We started the trip around the aquarium by looking at all the creatures native to the Atlantic Ocean and even learnt how to make jelly fish out of bottles.

As we travelled around the aquarium, we looked at creatures from most of the different oceans and rivers around the world. Some of the most interesting were the electric eel (which was huge!) and the piranha fish. We saw very calm and beautiful seahorses and clown fish also, the clown fish look just like Nemo! When we had our specialist learning talk, our guide taught us all about sharks; we learnt about their teeth and eggs and even got to feel their skin, which was actually quite rough. I’m sure we all have our favourite fish or experience from the day, but all in all we had a great time. It was very enjoyable.

Oak Class Term 3

What a great term oak Class has had! This term we have all become expert palaeontologists and shared our knowledge of dinosaurs. We have enjoyed sorting carnivorous, herbivore and omnivore dinosaurs, identifying different types of dinosaurs and learnt all about fossils and fossil hunter Mary Anning. We got to hold real fossils and then had a go at making Ammonites out of clay.

In Forest School we had the chance to make delicious fireside pizzas, which was great fun and very tasty. We also made large bug hotels and observed some seasonal changes of the forest area.

In Maths we have been learning about sharing equally and unequally repeated addition and multiplication. We have also carried on our learning of addition and subtraction. During English lessons, we have written some fantastic information texts about dinosaurs and a brilliant stories based in Tyrannosaurus Drip.

Oak Class Term 2

Oak have had the most busy and exciting term 2! We have enjoyed new experiences in Forest school, like building fires and making bread over a fire. In topic we have learnt about Remembrance Day and made beautiful jars to celebrate it. We have also been learning about Christmas around the world, learning about different traditions and even trying new foods like very strong French cheese. During English lessons we have written instructions and even wrote a letter to Santa, which we walked up to the post-box and sent.
In Maths we have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes and different units of measure. We enjoyed weighing items on giant scales. We finished the term with a magical trip to the pantomime in Bath.

Oak Class Term 1

What a first term in Year One we have had! We have enjoyed lots of wonderful experiences in Forest School, including making autumnal hedgehogs and a brilliant morning of den building. In topic we have learnt all about life cycles of humans and animals and created a beautiful display of our symmetrical butterflies. In English we have written a story about Hattie the hedgehog and learnt about writing instructions (including making a yummy jam sandwich!). In Maths we have used Dienes to help us understand place value and have began to draw out real stories and maths stories to help us add and subtract.
