Hello and welcome to Nursery!

We have had a great start to the year and all the children have settled in really well.
The teaching team in nursery this year is: Chantelle, Natalie, Brenda and Sarah.
Our topic for Term 1 is ‘All about me’, throughout the term we will learn lots about ourselves, families and our feelings. We have already begun exploring this through self-portraits and looking at our reflection in mirrors.

Some useful information:
We have forest school on Monday mornings for children in their preschool year. Please ensure they come dressed in long trousers and long sleeved tops. All children should have wellies and waterproofs in nursery to ensure we can enjoy play in all weathers.
We like to get messy in nursery! Please can you ensure children always have a spare change of clothes (a complete set including socks and underwear)


All About Me

Our topic this term has been ‘All About Me’. We have explored ourselves through self-portraits and looking at our reflection in the mirror. We have measured how tall we are and how big our feet are. We have looked at the similarities and differences between ourselves. We talked about who was in our family and who was special to us and why. The children loved hearing the messages their parents wrote of why they love them so much. We shared pictures from home and the children loved talking about them with their friends. We looked at our feelings and talked about what makes us happy and what makes us sad. We iced and decorated biscuits with different feelings faces on them.

The children have had their first forest sessions this term and have loved it! They have been brilliant at putting on their own waterproofs and wellington boots. They all have learnt how to keep themselves safe while we are the forest area and have been brilliant at pointing out any hazards they find. They have explored the natural area and went on a bug hunt. They have been developing their gross motor skills by using the tyre swing and climbing the nets. They have particularly been interested in using the wooden pallets to make their own obstacle course and pirate ship!

During our pre-school phonics sessions the children have taken part in lots of listening and attention games. We have particularly focused on listening to different sounds inside, outside and to instruments and objects in a bag. We have begun learning our single sounds and the children have loved spotting them in the environment and having a go at letter formation.

We have developed our counting skills in maths by reciting numbers to 10 and beyond. We have begun developing our understanding of matching numeral to quantity and explored the concept of adding numbers all together. We have been looking at number recognition and ordering them to 10. We have explored the concept of weight and looked at ‘heavy’ and ‘light’. We have explored the concept of ‘biggest’ and ‘smallest’ and have had a go at ordering objects in size order.


Term 6 review

Our final topic of the year has been ‘How many pebbles on the beach?’ We started this topic by making our own beach inside. The children explored shells, seaweed and pebbles, talking about the textures and smell. This was extended to outside by exploring our new sand pit which Year 6 kindly built for us in Forest School. The children have loved taking their shoes off and feeling the sand in their feet. The children were then keen to explore what animals they might find in the ocean. This was supported by lots of story books. They then used different materials to make their own underwater animals.

During our preschool phonics sessions we have continued to listen out for the initial sound in words and have a go at segmenting them. We have done this through puzzles and games. We continued to practise writing our name and holding our pen correctly in preparation for school.

We have been developing our Maths skills through lots of group games this term. The children have loved playing the ‘seaside shell game’ and have been looking at recognising numbers and counting objects to match those numbers.

Finally we had lots of fun practising and taking part in sports day. The children did such a great job!!


Term 5 review

This term we have been exploring the topic, ‘Are Eggs Alive?’. We started this with an egg hunt around the Nursery using clues to help us find them. We explored eggs that were raw and boiled. The children experimented with different ways in which they could use them. They cracked them, squished them, painted them and even made scrambled egg for snack time. The children loved cracking them open to see what would happen!

Our story this term has been ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’. The children have loved retelling the story using picture cards and acting it out by feeding our giant caterpillar. Alongside this the children have been making their own butterflies and caterpillars for our spring display in nursery.

During our preschool phonics sessions the children were introduced to Rory the robot who eats words. The children have been practising listening to the initial sounds and segmenting words out; then feeding them to Rory. We have been practising writing our name and holding our pen correctly. Alongside this in preparation for school we have been having a go at letter formation. Don’t they look great!

We have been developing our maths skills by using nets to catch ducks. The children have been counting how many ducks they could catch and matching this amount to the numbers on the lily pads.

We have been investigating the different weather we have had over this term. We experimented by measuring how much rain we had in different pots. The children loved the windy weather and made kites and streamers to see how high they could fly. We began talking about keeping ourselves safe in the sun with hats and sun cream.


Term 4 Review

This term at nursery we all became explores! We started of the term by exploring our favourite places at nursery with hide and seek. The children used their bodies to move and hide in different ways and squeeze into different places. We talked about and explored maps and looked at the similarities and differences between them. The children used their fingers and pens to see if they could follow the different routes. Following on from this the children made their own binoculars and magnifying glasses to explore and investigate the inside and outside environment further.

We continued to develop our maths skills by looking at numbers. The children explored matching numeral to quantity. We looked at ordering numbers and developing our maths language of size using the words ‘longest’, ‘shortest’, ‘biggest’, ‘smallest’.

We love stories at nursery and couldn’t wait to celebrate world book day. The children all came in some fantastic costumes! They really enjoyed the year 6 children coming in to share stories with them.


Term 3 Review

This term has been a cold one! We have talked about the season of winter and explored the natural environment. We have talked and commented about the changes we could see and feel and discussed how to keep ourselves warm. The children took a particular Interest in ice which they found outside. We explored this further by freezing our own water with lots of fun objects in to see what would happen to it. Following a snowy weekend the children couldn’t wait to talk about what they did. This sparked an interest in using different materials to make our own snowmen.

We have continued to develop our maths skills by looking at shapes. We made our own shape monsters, printed shapes with potatoes and looked at matching and grouping shapes.

Children continued exploring alliteration and rhyme during our phonic sessions. We learnt some new games such as ‘odd one out’ rhyming pairs’ and ‘rhyming bingo’. We began exploring matching objects to letters to see if we could hear the initial sound.

Following the children’s interest we looked at the topic space. We explored this through stories and role play and learnt some exciting new words! The children have also shown an interest in dinosaurs this term. We have explored this through small world play and went on our own dinosaur hunt in the forest.

 

We looked at Chinese New Year and talked about their special celebrations. We tried Chinese food and explored rice and noodles through play. We talked about ‘year of the pig’ and read the zodiac story. We made Chinese lanterns and had a go at Chinese writing on special fans we made.  

Term 2 Review

This term has been all about Christmas. We have been very busy and have had lots of Christmas activities around nursery to promote children’s own creative ideas. The children learnt the Christmas story for their nativity. They did a fantastic job at getting on the stage to sing and say lines! We have enjoyed exploring the play-doh with Christmas smells such as peppermint and cinnamon. We even drew pictures of what we wanted Father Christmas to bring us and had a go at writing our own name.

Through child led play the children took an interest in the story ‘The Gingerbread man’. We have followed this interest throughout nursery by re-telling the story with props and decorating our own gingerbread man to eat. We used cotton buds to paint our gingerbread man to help develop our fine motor skills.

We have continued to develop our counting skills in maths by reciting numbers to 10 and beyond. We have begun developing our understanding of matching numeral to quantity and explored the concept of adding numbers all together. Children began exploring alliteration and rhyme during our phonic session through the game ‘silly soup’.


Term 1 Review

The children have had their first forest sessions this term and have loved it! They have been brilliant at putting on their own waterproofs and wellington boots. They have explored the natural resources to make their own cakes and soups. Using their gross motor skills they have been climbing nets and swinging on the tyres.

This term has all been about colours. We have explored colours through lots of different means; such as messy play (shaving foam and paint), through plastic and painting lovely pictures.

Through child led play the children have been into the story ‘ The Three Little Pigs’. We have followed this interest throughout nursery by re- telling the story, making masks and building houses. Don’t they look great!
